Consolidate Varsity’s Academic Excellence, Shun Vices, VC
Counsels New Students
… As 3989 Students Take Matriculation Oath

The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, Prof.
Igbekele Ajibefun, on Friday last week, advised the 3,989 new students admitted to the
Institution to build on the landmarks of their predecessors – students and alumni.
Prof. Ajibefun also counseled the students to eschew social vices that could thwart their
studentship.
The VC gave the advice at the 2014/2015 Matriculation Ceremony of the University.
The VC said, “Our students and alumni’s landmarks continue to signpost the University's
academic excellence. In 2014, Master Akeem Opeyemi Longe, the first student to graduate with
a First Class in Law did not only repeat the same feat in the Nigerian Law School 2014 Final Bar
Examination, he emerged the Best Graduating Student in that examination. Not only that, this
University won nine out of the 27 prizes available in that examination.
“A 400-Level student of Kinetics of this University, Miss Omolara Omotoso, a veteran Gold
medalist at NUGA and Commonwealth Games, represented the nation at the 2012 Olympics
Games held in London.
“All these feats, and deliberate policies, programmes and efforts put in place earned the
University the rating of the reigning Best State University in Nigeria by the United States
Transparency International Standards, USTIS.
“As a University, we cherish these modest achievements and guard them jealously. Indeed, we
yearn for more. And we are confident that having admitted you through merit-driven policy, we
have opened the door for achieving more laurels and attaining our aspiration to be the best
university in Nigeria and among the best 10 in Africa.”
Congratulating the students on their admission to the University, Prof. Ajibefun said, “I urge you
to choose the narrow but dignifying path of industry, discipline, responsibility, and eschew the
wide and doomed path of criminality and social and academic vices so that your dreams of
becoming responsible members of the public could be realized.”
The VC warned that any student that runs afoul of the rules and regulations of the University
would be shown the way out.
He reminded the fresh students that the University has zero tolerance for vices and has the
legal instruments not only to discover all acts of indiscipline, including examination misconduct,
rape, cult activities, theft, but to also deal with them in accordance with the law.
Prof. Ajibefun said the University would continue to provide an enabling environment through
enacting relevant laws and provision of adequate and modern facilities for the students to
learn.
He urged the students to obey the extant rules and take advantage of the available facilities to
learn and succeed.
He said, “AAUA has the required conducive learning environment, trained and well-motivated
staff and requisite facilities to fulfill our teeming students' learning aspirations.
“Besides being one of the few universities that have operated a stable academic calendar in the
last five years, this University has, in the last five years alone, provided more than 60
infrastructural facilities to take care of classroom, laboratory, workshop and office challenges
that it inherited on relocation to Akungba Akoko in 1999, including the new Senate Building
which unarguably remains the most compelling and best equipped Senate Building in any
Nigerian university.”
The Registrar, Mr. Bamidele Olotu, administered the Matriculation Oath on the students.

New Elizade Varsity VC Visits AAUA, Seeks Collaboration

New Elizade Varsity VC Visits AAUA, Seeks Collaboration
The newly-appointed Vice Chancellor of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, Prof. Kunle
Oloyede, on Wednesday last week, paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor of Adekunle
Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.
Prof. Oloyede, who was accompanied by other Principal Officers of the university, sought for
collaboration between AAUA and Elizade University.
Prof. Oloyede said, “We are looking for collaboration with sister universities such that we can
create a new generation of graduates who will understand that it is not just good enough to
work technically, it also has to be finished well. We are looking at how we can build our
students to have sufficient awareness and developed minds in the area of entrepreneurship.
Oloyede, a Professor of Medical Engineering who has spent over two decades in Australia,
added, “It is not just enough to call yourself a graduate in today’s world and come out looking
for job. Jobs are very scarce irrespective of the country you are in. If no one is creating jobs, no
one gets a job. In Australia, 90 per cent of jobs there are created by the small businesses.
“There are significant opportunities in this country. We will not only be giving our students the
basic education, but also the professional skills. You must have something you can take to an
employer.”
Responding, the AAUA VC, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, welcomed the visitors on behalf of the
University.
Prof. Ajibefun said, “I am glad to say that AAUA is ready to work with Elizade University. As a
new VC of Elizade University with overwhelming experience from both home and abroad, I have
a strong belief that working with you will be a great exploit for both Universities.”
“Your University has a common dream with ours. We are building a university that is
knowledge-driven, a university that aspires to do new things and a university that is determined
to equip the students with the required skills of the 21st century.”
The VC, who reiterated that AAUA is known for excellence and scholarship, congratulated Prof.
Oloyede on his appointment as the VC of Elizade University, saying, “As soon as you (visiting VC)
settle down, we will look at some areas that we can collaborate with your university.”

AIG Zone 11 Visits AAUA, Assures Varsity of Cooperation
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, on Wednesday last week,
played host to the new Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 11 (Ondo, Osun
and Oyo States) , AIG Kalafite Helen Adeyemi, and officers under her Command.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, other Principal and top Officers of the University
received the entourage in the VC’s Boardroom.
Speaking, AIG Adeyemi said the visit to AAUA, one of the major stakeholders in Ondo State, was
part of her familiarization tour of the State.
The AIG said she had been briefed on the cooperation of the University with the police,
particularly, in the areas of information dissemination and the fight against criminal activities.
Adeyemi appreciated the cooperation and warm reception of the University Management and
assured them of their cooperation.
She said, “On our part, we want to assure you that the Police in Ondo State will continue to
cooperate with you. We will treat all information received with uttermost confidentiality; and
we want to assure you that we will ensure that your university is rid of all criminal activities.”
She noted that security of lives and property could no longer be left in the hands of the police,
hence, the need for synergy with all stakeholders.
She said, “We ask for your further collaboration and implore the university to always make
information available to the police promptly.”
In his remark, Professor Ajibefun, expressed the joy of the University to receive the AIG and her
entourage and conveyed to her, the varsity’s satisfaction with the performance of the Police in
the State.
The VC said, “There has been a robust relationship between the University and the Police
authorities and that is why the State and our University have been very peaceful.”
He also commended the Police’s efforts toward the rescue of the Akungba regent who was
recently kidnapped alongside other people.
Prof. Ajibefun noted that the peace being enjoyed in the University community was not
unconnected with the efforts of the Police.
The VC said, “Our University has been very peaceful because of your cooperation with us. The
University will continue to cooperate with the police authorities. If our university had been
overwhelmed with criminal activities, it wouldn’t have been rated the Best State University in
Nigeria by the United States Transparency International Standards, USTIS. We want to affirm
that the University will continue to collaborate with you in any area that will help to rid the
society of crimes.”

Students
 As Student Affairs Division Holds Summit on Cohabitation
The Vice Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, Prof.
Igbekele Ajibefun, on Wednesday last week, condemned the prevailing cohabitation syndrome
among students of tertiary institutions.
Professor Ajibefun, who was represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Benson
Akinnawonu, gave the disapproval in his Opening Remark at a One-Day Summit on
“Cohabitation among Students” organized by the Student Affairs Division of the University in
conjunction with the Airtel Telecommunication outfit.
The Vice Chancellor said, “Cohabitation among students is a reprobate act that requires all
hands to be on deck to arrest the ugly trend. Living together and having sexual relationship
without being married is a trend that has virtually eroded the level of morality among the
youth, particularly students of higher institutions.
“Findings by researchers have proved that cohabitation among unmarried students has been on
the rise and if deliberate and pragmatic steps are not taken by all stakeholders, including
managements of tertiary institutions, parents and religious leaders, this anomaly will continue
to rise unabated and the society will ultimately suffer for it.”
Prof. Ajibefun commended the Student Affairs Division under the deanship of Dr. Bolanle
Ogungbamila for the initiative and thanked Airtel, one of the nation’s leading
telecommunication networks, for the partnership to campaign against the immoral trend.
In his Welcome Address, Dr. Ogungbamila identified low level of monitoring, mentoring and
inadequate hostel accommodation as factors that have engendered cohabitation among the
students.
He said, “The low level of monitoring and mentoring coupled with inadequate hostel
accommodation have engendered co-habitation among our students. Apart from constituting a
source of distraction, co-habitation has physiologic, psychological, economic, academic and
spiritual implications for students who engage in the act.”
The resource persons at the summit were the Director of Women Studies and Development
Centre, AAUA,  Dr. (Mrs.) Nireti Duyilemi, who spoke on “Campus Co-Habitation: A Negative
Attitudinal Disposition that Debases the Dignity of Womanhood”; and Dr. (Mrs.) A.A Akintola,
who examined the topic, “Adolescent’s Risky Sexual Behaviour and Its Consequences on
Reproductive Health.”
