Ebola: World's Hope on US, UK Trial Vaccines, Says Medical Expert

Ebola: World's Hope on US, UK Trial Vaccines, Says Medical Expert

Counsels Varsities to Set up Ebola Response Committees

A Consultant Public Health Physician at the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure, Dr. Stephen Fagbemi, on Thursday last week, said the United State of America and the United Kingdom are working on curable vaccines for Ebola, saying that the drugs being used to combat the life-threatening disease are mere experimental drugs.

Dr. Fagbemi dropped the hint at a one-day public sensitization programme organized by Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba- Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, for the University community and its environs on the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.

Dr. Fagbemi, who spoke on Public Health Significance of Ebola Virus Disease: Lessons to Learn by a University Community, said, "There is no standard treatment for Ebola yet, but only supportive treatment. There is supportive care if patients come quickly to hospital. Our hope and prayer is on the two vaccines that are currently on trial in UK and USA. And the Zmapp is just an experimental drug being used now as a trial drug in a few cases."

Giving the up-to-date breakdown of the outbreak of the deadly disease, the medical expert said, "EVD outbreaks occur primarily in Central and East Africa. It started in Guinea but now had spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal. In December 2013, the first Ebola virus outbreak registered in the region occurred in Guinea."

The Medical Expert noted that the World Health Organization had projected 20,000 cases of EVD worldwide over the next nine months.

"As at August 28, 2014, suspected and confirmed cases were 3,069, suspected case deaths were 1,552; laboratory confirmed cases were 1,752. But as at yesterday (Wednesday last week), suspected death had gone up to 1,900, out of which 40 per cent died in the last four weeks."

The EVD, which came to into Nigeria through a Liberian, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, has recorded 18 suspected and confirmed cases, eight suspected and confirmed case deaths, 13 laboratory confirmed cases and five discharges.

He explained that the primary hosts of EVD are fruit bats, while other carriers of the disease include monkeys, chimpanzees, gorillas, antelopes.

Dr. Fagbemi noted, "Transmission into humans first occurred from contact with infected animals. Ebola is then transmitted through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals - dead body, raw meat.

"Human-to-human transmission occurs through contact with broken skin or mucous membranes, blood, or other bodily fluids or secretions (stool, urine, saliva, semen) of infected people. Indirect transmission occurs through contact with environments contaminated with such fluids such as soiled clothing, bed linen, or used needles and other sharp object.

"Transmissions can also occur through burial ceremonies (contact with the body of the deceased person); and men who have recovered from the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to seven weeks after recovery from illness."

Dousing the palpable fear of contracting EVD, Dr. Fagbemi explained that the disease cannot be contracted through smokes, air, water (swimming), money or food.

He added, "The incubation period is from 2-21 days; and throughout this period, one cannot be infected until the individual starts showing the symptoms. It's only spread when people are sick."

The Medical Expert listed the symptoms to include fever, severe headache, weakness, muscle aches and as it progresses, severe vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea pharyngitis, conjunctivitis, external bleeding, extremely high body temperature and prostration.

He also highlighted the complications to include multiple organ failure, severe bleeding, jaundice, delirium, seizures, comas and shock, while mortality rate for the most lethal form of Ebola is as high as 90 per cent.

The Guest Lecturer, urged the health-care workers "to apply the standard precautions consistently with all patients - regardless of their diagnosis - in all work practices at all times. Health-care workers have frequently being infected while treating patients with suspected or confirmed EVD."

On the prevention of the deadly disease, Dr. Fagbemi canvassed more awareness programmes, including posters, handbills, high index of suspicion, hand washing with soap and water, reduction in contact with high-risk infected animals, and avoiding eating bush meat for now.

He counseled against use of common napkins or hand towels, urging Nigerians to use tissue papers (toilet roll).

He added, "Avoid overcrowding, large gatherings, rallies, crusades, among others. Provision of water and soap in strategic areas around campus, outside large lecture rooms, regular cleaning and disinfection of toilets are sacrosanct!"

He enumerated other precaution measures to include basic hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (hand gloves, etc.), safe injection practices and safe burial practices.

Dr. Fagbemi asked the audience to call 08033EBOLAHELP in the event of any suspected case of Ebola.

He advised authorities of higher institutions in Nigeria to, as a matter of urgency, set up Ebola Response Committee comprising teaching and non-teaching staff, health personnel and students, whose mandates should include developing response strategies, implementing response strategies, monitoring and evaluating constant vigilance, monitoring news updates and alerts, monitoring trends and development on campus as well as neighbouring host communities, and advising the leadership of the Institutions.

My Tenure Ends January 4, I Am Eager to Return to Class, Says AAUA VC

My Tenure Ends January 4, I Am Eager to Return to Class, Says AAUA VC

Contrary to widespread speculations of possible extension of his tenure as Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, Professor Femi Mimiko, on Monday last week, disclosed that he would not stay in office beyond January 4, 2015.

Prof. Mimiko made the disclosure at the post-confab reception held in his honour by the University.

Prof. Mimiko, who appreciated those clamouring for extension of his tenure because of their conviction that he had done well, however, stated the reasons why such a call was out of place.

He said, “First, there is the need to protect the legal framework for the appointment and tenure of Vice Chancellors as laid out in our laws. Second, we must seek to nurture institutions rather than individuals. Third, for those who are persuaded that I should stay on because I had done well, the truth is that they wouldn’t have had an idea of my own modest capacity if I hadn’t been allowed to serve as VC because somebody had to be kept on for doing good job.

“Fourth, there is no end to the work of a University, indeed of any organization. So, even if you give me 10 more years, there would always be something still asking to be done at the end of the 10th year. Fifth, what I had was a five-year plan for the University, which I sold to the Council/Senate Selection Committee at the interview sessions it had with all the candidates in late 2009. That is the programme I have tried to implement assiduously since January 4, 2010 when I resumed as VC. I did not and still do not have plan for a sixth or seventh year.

“Sixth, and perhaps most importantly, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I just want to move on! My tenure ends on January 4, and under no circumstances am I going to be on this seat on January 5, 2015. I am eager to return to class.”

Prof. Mimiko urged the University Community to trust God to get the right person to take over the administration of AAUA after him.

• Prof. Mimiko Donates Allowance to Indigent Students Scholarship Scheme
• Promises More Welfare Packages for Students
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, on Monday last week, held a reception in honour of its Vice Chancellor, Professor Femi Mimiko, who just returned to his turf as Vice Chancellor from the four-month National Conference at Abuja.

Prof. Mimiko, who was received by members of the University Community at a colourful ceremony which started from the University main gate, inspected a guard of honour mounted by the University’s Nigerian Army Cadet Corps and the Man O’ War, before he was ushered to the Council Chamber venue of the reception, by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, other Principal Officers of the University, Professor, Deans of Faculty, Heads of Department, senior officers of the University and a teeming army of students.

Prof. Mimiko is the only serving Vice Chancellor delegate to the Confab.

In his speech, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rotimi Ajayi, who held the fort for four months, welcomed and congratulated the VC on behalf of the entire University Community on his successful participation in the Confab and his safe return home.

The DVC described Prof. Mimiko as a highly resourceful academic leader and an astute administrator “that is full of innovative ideas and a painstaking listener.”

Prof. Ajayi noted that Prof. Mimiko did not only do the University proud at the Confab, but also represented Ondo State well and served the country diligently and patriotically. He expressed the hope that the Conference recommendations, when adopted, would help to reshape the country for the better.

He thanked the VC for the confidence reposed in him to hold the fort, adding, “Let me particularly thank the Vice Chancellor for not leaving me alone in the saddle as he was always providing the needed guidance for me whenever I asked for it even from Abuja.”

The DVC appreciated the staff and students of the University for their demonstration of love and acceptance to the VC by turning out en-masse to welcome him back to campus.

He specially thanked the Vice Chancellor's wife, Abosede, for her prayers, support and encouragement for the VC, saying, “Behind every successful man is a woman of substance.”

Prof. Ajayi also thanked the Visitor to the University and Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, for the robust support the University enjoyed from him during the period.

Some members of the University Community, who spoke at the occasion, commended the robust and meaningful contributions of the Vice Chancellor at the Confab and noted that the initiative of the Vice Chancellor to have institutionalized the structures of the University through policy and regulatory books kept it (AAUA) running smoothly throughout the four months.

Responding, Prof. Mimiko, who was obviously delighted at the warm reception, thanked the DVC for holding the fort successful and tenaciously and appreciated other Principal Officers, all staff and students of the University  for the support and cooperation.

The VC highlighted some of the core recommendations of the Confab and said the University would create a platform on which the take-homes from the National Conference would be discussed.

As a demonstration of his avowed belief that education should be for all, background notwithstanding, Prof. Mimiko announced the donation of part of his allowance from the Conference to the University’s Scholarship Scheme for indigent students.

The VC said, “There is a particular programme that is so dear to my heart. I know that there are so many indigent students on our campus. Under the University Advancement Office, we had thought of floating a Scholarship Scheme into which we will put funds from everywhere. And I can see that in the future the funds will be so big that every student that has the need will be able to draw from. I had decided before I left Abuja to donate part of my allowance into the Scheme’s account as a seed fund to support indigent students of AAUA.”

Prof. Mimiko expressed delight that the students were going about their activities smoothly, adding, “It is good that staff and students have kept the Campus clean and green. I give kudos to all on this!”

The VC advised the students, especially their leaders, to always appreciate the critical place of leadership and have the courage to make hard choices that would define their future for good.

He said, “At all times, leaders must consider the wider implications of all their actions and what all of these mean for their constituents. Your mission should be how to contribute to the stability of your University. It was not for nothing that AAUA was rated the Best State University in Nigeria in 2013.”

Prof. Mimiko promised that the University would further pay attention to issues that are of critical importance to students.

On the notorious power challenge ravaging Akungba community where a huge population of students is resident and other student-related issues, the Vice Chancellor said, “We would seek ways of working with the community to intervene in the electricity situation in town. We would keep upgrading our infrastructure. As a matter of fact, we may be able to have a few more classrooms for use during the upcoming Semester examinations. On transportation, we may be able to deploy a few more tricycles to ease movement around the Campus.

“We are going to explore the possibility of constructing a number of Bus/Relaxation Centres on the road to the Umaru Yar’Ardua LT. We are also recruiting more medical doctors at the health centre to reduce waiting time for staff and students.”

The regent of Akungba, Princess Toyin Omosowon also graced the reception.

AAUA VC Counsels Fresh Students to Shun Social Vices … As 3,634 Students Take Matriculation Oath

AAUA VC Counsels Fresh Students to Shun Social Vices
… As 3,634 Students Take Matriculation Oath

The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, Prof. Femi Mimiko, on Tuesday last week, advised the 3,634 fresh students admitted to the Institution for the 2013/2014 academic session to shun vices capable of jeopardizing their studentship.

Prof. Mimiko, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rotimi Ajayi, said, “Let me make it abundantly clear that AAUA has zero tolerance for social vices. Having taken the Matriculation Oath today, I urge you to respect and observe the Oath by eschewing all social vices such as cultism, examination misconduct, truancy, drug addiction, indiscipline, rape, murder, prostitution, indecent dressing, kidnapping and any form of violence.

“This University is governed by laws and the instrumentality of the law shall be applied at any moment of infraction. I sincerely advise you to guard your admission jealously, and resist anything that may want to rub you of this golden privilege to study in this University.”

Congratulating the matriculants on their admission, the VC noted that of the 18,019 candidates that sought admission to the University, only 3,634 were admitted purely on merit.

Prof. Mimiko noted that the University’s merit-driven admission policy was a deliberate and courageous effort to make AAUA globally competitive and distinctive in the 21st century. He said, “It is an initiative geared toward producing confident, self-reliant and well-rounded graduates who can compete favourably with their colleagues anywhere in the world and be a pride to our country.”

He urged the new students to surrender themselves for the discipline and training the University would instill in them in the next four or five years in order to mould their lives.

Prof Mimiko reiterated that AAUA has been noted for its stable academic calendar in the last five years, adding, “Adekunle Ajasin University remains a beacon of hope as we vigorously strive to give the highest standard of quality education to our students and graduate them at a record time.”

The VC added, “As a result of the philosophy of the Labour Party Government of Ondo State led by our amiable and education loving Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, that no child drops out of school on account of inability to pay school fees, AAUA charges the least school fees in the country and has a Student Work-Study Scheme to support indigent students and to teach dignity of labour.”

He also advised the students to have the right attitude of hard work to their studies to achieve academic excellence and abide by and respect all the University rules and regulations as handed over to them during the orientation programme.

World Body Ranks Ajasin Varsity Best State University in Nigeria.

VC Dedicates Feat to Staff, Students

The US Transparency International Standards, USTIS, has ranked Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, the best State University in Nigeria.

The result was contained in the preliminary results from the USTIS 2013 Coordinated Nigeria Schools’ Survey, the world body’s school ranking initiative.

Only last month, AAUA came first nationally in the 2013 Annual Youth Debate for Nigerian Tertiary Institutions organized by the Federal Ministry of Education.

The National University Commission voted AAUA the Best State University in 2005 in terms of the quality of academic staff after carrying out its (NUC’s) carrying-capacity survey that year.

AAUA has, from 2011, had 100 per cent accreditation of its programmes by the National Universities Commission to date!

Adekunle Ajasin University came into world reckoning following the strategic initiative of the incumbent Vice Chancellor, Professor Femi Mimiko, who built the plank of his administration on “building a 21st century University, properly called!.” Through the initiative, the University which relocated to a temporary site in 1999, has become an infrastructure and academic haven.

Between 2010 when Professor Mimiko took office and now, the University has taken delivery of over 60 projects as a deliberate attempt to address the acute challenges of space.

The University championed merit-driven admission and staff appointment policies in Nigeria to shore up the integrity of its programmes.

In his reaction, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Femi Mimiko, expressed appreciation to God for allowing the modest contributions of his administration to attract world recognition.

“It is really a thing of joy that our modest contributions to educational development and humanity have attracted attention and recognition. As a University, we give all the glory to God. I would also like to appreciate the Visitor to the University and Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, for the robust support he accorded and continues to accord the University.

“I cannot thank the University immediate past Council under the leadership of the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Barrister Dan Nwanyanwu, OFR, mni, enough for direction and support.

“Words are inadequate to thank the staff and students of the University for their priceless contributions to the attainment of this feat. I dedicate this achievement to them.”

VC Lays AAUA SSANU CMS Secretariat Complex Foundation Stone

VC Lays AAUA SSANU CMS Secretariat Complex Foundation Stone

The Vice Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, Prof. Femi Mimiko, on Monday penultimate week, laid the foundation stone of the Secretariat Complex of the Institution's Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) Cooperative Multipurpose Society, CMS.

Prof. Mimiko, who expressed delight at the development, said the University considered the initiative laudable, progressive and deserving of all the support.

The VC described staff unionism as a very noble platform for ensuring mainstreaming of issues relating to welfare of members.

He, however, expressed concern that "The mistake we have often made is that when we talk of welfare, we tend to see it from the perspective of what the next guy or the next agency is giving or intends to give to us; and therefore, so many people, when they get into unionism, regard it as a battle ground. They erroneously see it as a forum to fight management or government."

Prof. Mimiko eulogized the leadership of the SSANU CMS for coming up with such initiative directed at using the resources and the resourcefulness of the union and its member to advance the welfare of the totality of its membership.

He expressed the hope that the project would be completed on time, saying, "I am delighted that this is a quick follow-up to the very successful experimentation represented by the CMS of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. After this, some other cooperatives will make request for land so that we can have more of this in place."

The VC charged SSANU CMS to make the project attain global standard that would stand the test of time.

He added, "As I have often said, universities are going-concerns. They do not go bankrupt. So, when you build for a University, you must build with hundreds of years in mind and not just for tomorrow."

Prof. Mimiko said all hands must be on deck to develop the university. He, therefore, called for the cooperation of the private sector operator, including cooperative formations, societies and clubs, to improve the infrastructure landscape of the University.

He promised that the University would continue to do the needful to further advance the course of its workers, saying, "An organization is as good as its workers. If the workers are not happy and not well trained, if they are poorly motivated, if they are harassed, you may not be able to get the best. But if they are highly motivated, you can expect that they will give their best."

Earlier in his address of welcome, the SSANU CMS President, Mr. M. A. Adelola, had said the initiative was made possible because of the friendly disposition of the University to activities of Societies, and the determination of the CMS to fulfill the yearning of its members to build a befitting complex.

Mr. Adelola appreciated the Vice Chancellor for providing the dynamic leadership that has transformed the infrastructural landscape of the University, and for allowing the Society to build its complex.

He promised that the Society would build in tune with the Master Plan of the University.

The Chair of the Roundtable and incumbent Chair of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, said the essence of the forum was to further equip the Vice Chancellor, a Professor of International Relations of international repute, with a robust intellectual platform for brainstorming on some of the challenges facing the country and the strategies to be employed in articulating the issues at the National Conference.

He noted that the VC is a political scientist, who is highly knowledgeable about the contemporary socio-political challenges facing our country and understands all the issues perfectly well.

In his remark, Prof. Mimiko said, "I consider myself the most privileged member of the delegates to the Conference because I have the resourcefulness of a University behind me. I therefore believe that we must make a difference as a delegate who has this assemblage of eggheads."

He expressed the hope that the National Conference would be successful.

Keynote Speakers at the forum were the Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Victor Olumekun and the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Mr. Adedayo Adedeji.

AAUA Celebrates Award-Winning Sports Contingent, Debaters in Glamour

Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, on Thursday last week, celebrated its Sports contingent to the 24th Nigerian University Games, NUGA, and its representatives at the 2013 National Debate for Nigerian Tertiary Institutions. The University organized a dinner in appreciation of its ambassadors.

It will be recalled that AAUA debaters (students) emerged the overall winner of the 2013 edition of the Annual Youth Debate for Nigerian Tertiary Institutions organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and held at the Ministry's Headquarters at Abuja, on Monday, March 3, 2014.

Also, the AAUA Sports contingent was outstanding at the just-concluded 24th NUGA held between February 12 and 22, 2014 at the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife. The University participated in six games, won two Gold, three Silver and one Bronze medals to emerge 13th out of the 41 participating universities and 2nd out of the state universities that took part in the tournament.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Femi Mimiko, in his remark, appreciated the Sports contingent and the debaters for doing the University proud.

Prof. Mimiko, who visited the contingent during NUGA event, acknowledged the true spirit of sportsmanship demonstrated by the student-athletes, saying, "I was very excited by the very high spirit of members of the contingent."

The VC added, "Yes, we are placed 13th out of 41 Universities that participated; and 2nd among the 19 state and private-owned Universities that participated. But as we have often said, our involvement in sporting activities is not directly related to the winning of laurels. Important as that is, what we celebrate, indeed, are participation and the leadership development platform that your involvement in sporting activities provides you with."

He expressed delight that the students are doing very well both at local and international tournaments.

Prof. Mimiko reiterated that as a matter of policy, the University would continue to support and develop sports on campus.

He added, "As we always do, anywhere there is going to be sporting event to which our students are invited, the University will bend over backward to look for money to support them.

"This year, we are going to move forward to buy all the sporting equipment required in the new gymnasium such that it would become more functional."

He enjoined the Sport Unit staff and students to make judicious use of the facilities and institute a maintenance culture that will make the facility enduring.

He thanked the staff for nurturing the students to record the feats, saying, "What we are celebrating today is a product of collective effort."

Earlier in his speech, the AAUA Chair of Sports Council, Prof. Jacob Ogundari, had, on behalf of the contingent and the Sports Unit, thanked the University Management for allowing them to participate in the event.

He particularly thanked the VC for honouring the contingent and for the prompt support given to Sports development in the University, saying, "The VC has never turned down any of our requests to participate in competitions."

Prof. Ogudari also thanked the University for provision of facilities, including an ultra-modern gymnasium, sports pavilion, coaster bus and an inviting environment.

The honourees thanked the University Management for recognizing them and promised to continue to do the University proud.

Miss Omolara Omotoso, said, "Without the University sponsorship and provision of enabling an environment, little or nothing would have been achieved. On behalf of my colleagues, I thank the University for honouring us. It is a motivation for us to do better in our subsequent outings."

The lead speaker at the debate, Miss Olajumoke Adekugbe, attributed the

A Senior Manager of the bank, Mr. Oluseye Alade, assured the University Community and other prospective customers of excellent service delivery.

Mr. Alade said, “We are now on campus to give you the Zenith Bank excellent service. I want you to know that the staff and the students are the reasons why we are here. In Zenith Bank, we refer to our customers as gods. We don’t compromise quality service delivery. Service failure is a major offence in Zenith Bank and we don’t allow it.”

Governance: Gov. Mimiko Scores AAUA Council, Management High

Governance: Gov. Mimiko Scores AAUA Council, Management High

Ondo State Governor and Visitor to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, on Tuesday last week said his administration was satisfied with the achievements of the out-gone Governing Council and the incumbent Management of the Institution.
Governor Mimiko, who was accompanied by some top government functionaries in the State, made the statement during an inspection tour of AAUA  on-going five-storey Senate Building, after the Opening Ceremony of the Ondo State three-day Mini National Conference, held at the University Guest House.
He said, “On behalf of the people and government of Ondo State, let me put on record, our admiration for the way, Council and Management of this University, have run this place in the last five years. We are very proud of your accomplishments, especially in the academic field.”
The Governor attributed the huge academic success of AAUA students to the merit-driven admission policy of the University, saying, “Our goal is to build a 21st Century University and that is why we are particularly glad that in the last five years, there has not been ‘Vice Chancellor’s list or Governor’s list’. Every admission into this University has been 100 per cent on merit. That is the foundation.”
Governor Mimiko said his administration “remains unequivocally committed to our dream of building a real University.”
Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Femi Mimiko, thanked the Governor and the Ondo State Government for their robust supports for the University.
He said, “The number of projects that we have put in place since the Governor Olusegun Mimiko-led government came into office is more than all the projects we had in place in the first 10 years of the University.
“I, therefore, on behalf of the University Community, express my most sincere and deep appreciation to the Governor and the Ondo State Government for the support they have given to this University. We are committed to continue to deliver a University that is worthy of that name – a University that is 21st Century compliant.”

Prof. Mimiko said in few weeks’ time, the University will invite the Visitor for the inauguration of the Senate building.
